Nouns

Definition

Nouns are naming words.

How to remember: both noun and name start with n. What is this called?

Examples:

  • people – girl/boy/Kiara/Sipho
  • animals – dog/cat, plants – tree/flower
  • places – house/Cape Town/Table Mountain
  • things – table/pencil
  • names of emotions – happiness and sadness.

 

Adjectives

Definition

Adjectives describe the noun.

How to remember: they tell us about the noun.

Examples:

  • colours – red/blue
  • textures – soft/bumpy
  • shape and size – big/round
  • characteristics –funny/clever

 

Verbs

Definition

Verbs are doing words – action words.

How to remember: Can you do the action? Can I jump? Yes, I can it is a verb.

Examples:

  • things you can do – run, jump, sing, listen
  • tricky verbs – is, was, are, were, has, had, have, shall, will

 

Adverbs

Definition

Adverbs describe the verb.

How to remember: adverb has the word “verb” in it. Adverbs tell us about the verb. It is common for adverbs to end with “ly”.

Examples

  • how something is done – quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly and softly
  • how often – monthly, seldom
  • where it happens – here, there
  • how intense it was – hardly, extremely
  • time – today, yesterday
